California Red Scale

California red scale (Aonidiella aurantii) is one of the most destructive citrus pests, and not just in California. Feeding on leaves, twigs, and fruit, this armored scale weakens trees, reduces vigor, and causes blemishes that lower fruit quality and market value.

The pest reproduces rapidly, completing multiple generations per year. Once established, it can spread quickly through orchards on wind, equipment, or workers. Infestations often lead to dieback, defoliation, and long-term yield loss.

Because California red scale is difficult to control with conventional insecticides, growers have increasingly turned to integrated pest management strategies. Suterra’s CheckMate® CRS pheromone-based mating disruption provides a proven, residue-free solution that prevents mating, reduces pest pressure, and protects tree health. Growers who incorporate CheckMate® CRS into their IPM programs achieve more consistent control while preserving beneficial insects.
