MONITORING INFORMATION

Monitoring adult populations with BioLure® pheromone traps is strongly recommended to provide baseline information on population density and to improve timing of mating disruption and/or insecticide treatments. Monitoring foliage and fruit for larval feeding is also needed at frequent intervals after planting to detect tomato pinworm and implement control strategies. Place one BioLure wing trap per 10 acres with a minimum of two traps per block at planting. Locate traps 30 feet from the border of each field edge. Place additional traps on borders that are most subject to migration from adjacent fields or host plants. Position traps at the tops of tomato plants, moving the traps up as plants grow taller. Check traps and record tomato pinworm moths caught. Clean trap bottoms at least twice weekly. Calculate moth catches on a per-night basis. The number of moths per trap per night can be used to determine economic treatment thresholds when used in conjunction with your local extension and/or fieldman recommendations. Replace BioLure traps and lures at least every two months. Replace BioLure traps and lures at least every two months. Replace trap bottoms more often if they become dirty or covered with dust, spray material, moth scales or other insect body parts. Do not handle other types of insect lures before or after placement of TPW traps without thoroughly washing hands. Good monitoring is an important part of achieving optimum results.
